This isn’t your mother’s 7-11!

The Boca Beach Shops redevelopment initiative was catapulted to fruition with the expansion and renovation of the first building at 831 East Palmetto Park Road. Mummaw and Associates, Inc.’s CREATE Team led by Director of Design – Diana B. Mummaw were given the opportunity to develop a new concept  store for the 7-11 Franchise Corporation.

7-11 was rebuilding their brand world wide. They were in the midst of a 400 store transformation when they selected the Boca Beach Shops as their next location. Strategically located 2 blocks from the Palmetto Park Road Pavilion Beach, this store would serve the eastern neighborhoods and all beach goers.

The project met significant neighborhood resistance early on. However, a unified group effort by the City of Boca Raton, 7-11 Inc., Investments Limited, CJM Construction, Mummaw and Associates, Inc.  Studio and neighborhood stakeholders ensured this store would not be your typical 7-11.

To begin with, 7-11 was introducing new product lines with fresh foods, fruits and a gourmet coffee bar. They would add cost effective foods, beach toys, chairs, etc.  for the beach goers. Specialty newspapers and recognizable beer and wine products made the store attractive for all shoppers.

Diana analyzed the existing color strategy from 7-11. She reviewed the existing materials and finishes and began her conceptual materiality design studies. New porcelain bead board tile walls replaced the traditional subway tile. Accented glass mosaic tile in the 7-11 color brands of green, oranges & browns were added. Upgraded cherry ceilings to match the retail gondolas elevated the overall quality of space. Her talents for selecting unique materials and matching dynamic colors together is remarkable.

She added soft pastel wall paint and a wood looking porcelain tile floor to emphasize the spatial enclosure. Decorative architectural lighting complimented the ceiling details.

7-11 then matched the upgraded finishes with their top of the line equipment and display cases. Fresh food and quality convenience store products were illuminated with LED back light displays. All customer counters were upgraded to corian solid surfaces  and the fronts of the gondolas displays were finished in matching cherry laminates.

Grand Opening Ceremony

It was a privilege to collaborate with our city leaders, neighborhood stakeholders and the prestigious 7-11 Corporation. This project was the beginning point of a neighborhood redevelopment initiative envisioned by the Investments Limited Company. East Palmetto Park Road is now vibrant, colorful and bringing new business to the once blighted area. A remarkable investment of capital was deployed. The neighborhood is now enjoying both the architectural transformation and the convenience of a world-class 7-11 and other businesses providing services that did not exist before.
