The Last of the “Master Carpenters”

Where have all of the tradesmen gone? Once upon a time, there was a PROCESS in becoming a skilled craftsman. The journey would begin as an apprentice, most likely in a Union, and the young carpenter would begin his training. And for what seemed like an eternity, this carpenter would do everything except carpentry. Setting up tools, breaking down tools, keeping the work site clean, handing tools to the master carpenter, stacking wood, moving wood BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, observing the masters execute their trade. Then small carpentry tasks would be assigned, The carpenter would be tested and challenged to do his work in a precise quality driven manner. The years would stack up. The tasks became more complex and the craftsmanship would evolve.

Steve Mitchell took that journey. He paid his dues as a helper with friend of the family who had a construction business.Over time, he became skilled in carpentry and his journey lead him to South Florida where he was quickly hired to work with some of South Florida’s premier home building companies. Steve believes that the key to being a quality craftsman revolves around the” basic fundamental rules of measuring twice and cutting once, reading a tape measure(Carefully), keeping your tools organized & clean, clean up your Work site and sticking  to a plan.”

Steve has become an integral part of the CREATE team. His attention to detail and quality ensures that the Work is completed to very high standards. He is a dynamic Master Carpenter with outstanding wood working, doors & hardware installation and overall carpentry skills. In addition, he has become an effective LEADER on our management team. His knowledge of all trades, not just carpentry, permits him to communicate directly with other trades in order to manage a complex construction schedule.

The fundamental training that made him a Master Carpenter has carried over into his project management responsibilities. Schedules are always tight and there is never enough budget:), But the Work must still be completed fast and with unsurpassed quality while giving our Clients exceptional Customer Service.

Mummaw and Associates General Contracting division has completed thousands of projects in the last 25 YEARS. Many of them recently have been successfully built under Steve Mitchell’s leadership.  He remains proudly one the “Last Master Carpenters” . We are proud to call him one of our family.
